Local salon group helps homeless into working in the salon

The salon team with a heart of gold, George’s Hairdressing of Allandale Road, Granby Street and the Parade, Oadby are reaching out again in the local community. This time, they are joining forces with local charity The Y in an effort to get the homeless off the street help homeless young people get back on their feet with a job to pay the bills and a skill for life in hairdressing.

On Friday 17th April 2015, a philanthropic dynamic duo of Salon Group Director Bianka Katon and Event Coordinator Leanne Cunningham will be putting them a group of young people through their paces at George’s city centre salon on Granby Street to win an apprenticeship with the salon group. The initiative, which was the brain child of Bianka Katon, kick starts a series of workshops of its kind, designed to get these young people, back on their feet and into steady employment.

The candidates will be invited to spend the entire day with the team at George’s working with them to learn about standard working practice and procedures, taking part in group exercises to encourage team work, customer service and interview techniques. At the end of this intensive, but fun session one lucky candidate will be chosen to become the future face of the award winning George’s Hairdressing salon group in Leicester.

Salon Group Director, Bianka Katon, is proud to be the first business to pioneer the initiative:
“'The intention is simple: to give young people who have faced enormous challenges in their lives the opportunity to unlock their true talent and potential through great training and mentoring. We are very much involved in the local community here in Leicester and we believe that everybody deserves a fresh start, regardless of what may have happened to them in the past. When we approached The Y to launch the initiative with them they jumped at the chance. Not everyone is as fortunate as we are and working alongside The Y it really hits home. For us to be able to give someone the opportunity to get back on their feet and give them a skill for life in hairdressing means more than anything. We’ll be giving someone a brighter future and you cannot put a price on that.”

Sandra Parker, Principle Housing Officer for The Y said: “We are able to provide safe housing and support for young people who find themselves homeless but they often have difficulty finding employment. The position being offered by George’s will be an amazing step to independence for someone who deserves a break.”

Leanne is really excited to see what untouched talent is out there:
“We're looking for a young person with good team work and interpersonal skills, a positive attitude to work, and most importantly of all, great customer service skills. The day promises to be challenging and fun, with one extremely lucky candidate getting a fully paid apprenticeship with Leicester's most successful salon.”
