No Second Night Out Launched

Wednesday, 4th December, 2013
Action Homeless are leading the Homeless Leicester Partnership (HeLP) in a new response to rough sleeping which seeks to ensure that no one will have to spend a second night sleeping on the streets of Leicester. No Second Night Out Leicester, funded by The Homelessness Transition Fund, provides a more efficient service for rough sleepers ensuring that they are linked with accommodation and support services as quickly as possible.

No Second Night Out Leicester was launched on Wednesday 4th December 2013 at Inclusion Healthcare. The project is a partnership, led by Action Homeless, which comprises of voluntary and statutory sector organisations including Leicester City Council, Inclusion Healthcare, Leicestershire Cares, The Y, Shelter Housing Aid and Research Project and Leicestershire Community Projects Trust. The project is being coordinated by the Ark Homeless Trust.

No Second Night Out Leicester has introduced an intensive floating support service which is being piloted specifically to enable the most entrenched rough sleepers to find and maintain tenancies. A new and more effective response to EU rough sleeping has also been introduced through the employment of specialist EU Support Workers. A targeted training programme is now being delivered to local staff working with rough sleepers to strengthen their knowledge of substance misuse, mental health issues as well as other specialist barriers. Rough sleepers will benefit from the development of a new well-being programme with links into volunteering, training and employment. The project is also working with the county boroughs to build a co-ordinated approach to rough sleeping across the city and county.

No Second Night Out builds on the work already carried out locally by the Rough Sleepers Task Force which was founded 18 months ago at a time when Leicester had the highest number of rough sleepers of any city outside of London. With an estimated 50 people sleeping on the streets every night, the Rough Sleepers Task Force was set up in an attempt to reduce these numbers and tackle rough sleeping in the city. Subsequently these numbers have been reduced but rough sleeping remains a major issue in Leicester.
