Universal-textiles.com donate thermal clothing

Thursday, 19th December, 2013
Leicester based winter clothing Universal-Textiles.com has donated hundreds of pieces of thermal clothing to help homeless people stay warm this winter. With the help of The World’s Most Travelled Man Fred Finn, the company is donating 1,500 pieces in total from the best-selling FLOSO range to YMCAs nationwide. Managing Director Ravi Karia paid a visit to The Y Support Project on Thursday to donate hats, thermal vests and long-johns to homeless people accessing the service for help.

This winter is forecast to be one of the most severe to hit Britain, with above-average snowfall, bitter arctic gales and plunging temperatures until February, making it particularly tough for those experiencing homelessness.

The Y tackles homelessness in Leicester by offering supported accommodation that helps young people live independently as well as offering practical support such as food, clothing and welfare advice to homeless people of all ages at The Y Support Project, based within the Dawn Centre on Conduit Street.

Mr Karia said: “It’s sad to think that anybody will be suffering on the streets at Christmas so we wanted to help. Something as simple as putting on a layer of thermal clothing can make a huge difference to coping with the cold.”

Kate Beaumont, Manager of The Y Support Project said: “Christmas and the winter months can be particularly difficult for rough sleepers or those who have vulnerable accommodation and are unable to afford the costs of heating. We are very grateful to Universal Textiles for their kind donation as there is always a greater need for clothing at this time of year and we will be able to distribute it to those who need it most.”

Thermal underwear works by trapping a thin layer of air between the skin and the thermal fabric. The body, which has a core temperature of 37oC, then warms this layer of air, and due to air’s natural insulation qualities, this in turn keeps the body warm.

Earlier in December, Universal-Textiles.com paid a visit to City YMCA London, accompanied by Fred Finn who holds the Guinness World Record for most travelled miles. Fred shared some of his cold-busting tips from around the world to the young homeless people supported by City YMCA and talked a little about some of the chilliest places he has visited.
