Conference Tackles Youth Homelessness
Tuesday, 10th June, 2008Leading voluntary organisations and council services from across the region will come together to share research and best practice for tackling youth homelessness. Right Here Right Now takes place at Leicester YMCA on 1st July 2008, from 9am - 4.30pm.
Leicester City Council and Leicester YMCA will jointly deliver the conference funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG). Their partnership working on homelessness has been identified by the Government as one of nine "Centres of Excellence" in the country. Leicester's collaborative approach is exemplified by the multi-agency Dawn Centre, a flagship project incorporating Leicester Homeless Primary Health Care Service, Leicester City Council accommodation and Leicester YMCA's Advice and Support Centre.
The conference features a presentation of the latest UK wide research into youth homelessness recently launched by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Centrepoint and the University of York. It will include key note speakers from across the UK, workshops, a market place and contributions from young people.
The day will focus on: prevention; those at risk; accommodation and helping young people move on to independence. It will cover issues such as social exclusion, experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic young people, safeguarding runaways, leaving care, young offenders, substance mis-use, health care, housing options and integrated services.
Paul Brown, chief executive of Leicester YMCA said "This is a great opportunity to profile our partnership with Leicester City Council and demonstrate the excellent services that are available to young people. The conference will provide a launch pad to further develop our good practice, learn from others and implement positive change."
Leicester City Council's director of housing, accommodation and tenancy support, Pat Hobbs, said: "I am proud of all of the services that have been set up in Leicester for homeless young people that prepare them for adulthood. This has only been achieved because of the great joint working and partnerships embedded within the voluntary and statutory sectors. Leicester YMCA has made an amazing contribution in transforming the lives of young homeless people. We look forward to sharing our experiences with other organisations but also welcome the opportunity of learning from others at the coming event."
