New Accommodation Launch!

Wednesday, 16th November, 2011
Leicester YMCA's East Street refurbishment project was officially opened by Tim Loughton, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families and Sir Peter Soulsby, First Elected City Mayor of Leicester.

Prior to the opening the minister and the city mayor had tea with three residents in their kitchen/lounge. They asked the minister what proposals he had for helping young people in supported housing get into work.

The refurbishment
Completed in July 2011, Leicester YMCA's refurbishment programme has created exciting, modern accommodation for 49 young people in a mix of one-bed studio flats, clusters and disabled access flats, all with en-suite facilities. The building provides a home for 16 - 25 year olds who come from care, young offenders institutes or have suffered a family breakdown or homelessness. Young people progress through a pathway which will cater for different levels of support needs, enabling them to move on to independence.

Film shows impact of accommodation for young people
Emma, Daniel and Lewis explain what the new accommodation means for them in a short film called "The Move" which was shown to guests at the opening event.

New Funding
Following the success of the project Leicester YMCA has just been awarded a further £660,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency to refurbish their supported accommodation units at Aylestone to the same standard. The original £4m project was funded by the Department for Education and the Homes and Communities Agency.

Awards for young people in education
The Michael John Henry Award was presented to Jordan, Luke and Paul to recognise their outstanding achievements on Leicester YMCA's education programmes. The award is in memory of Michael John Henry, a young man who had experienced homelessness and went on to dedicate himself to charitable work. He died tragically in 2001, leaving a legacy enabling Leicester YMCA to develop move on accommodation and the annual award for young people.
