See the transformed interior of iconic YMCA building on 9th July
Monday, 27th June, 2011Leicester YMCA is opening its doors for the afternoon on Saturday 9th July to give Leicester's community the opportunity to see the newly refurbished interior before young people move in. The grade two listed building on Granby Street and East Street has undergone 18 months of renovation work to transform the charity's supported accommodation services for young people.
Half hour tours of the new accommodation area will start at 2pm, 2.30pm, 3pm, 3.30pm and 4pm. Space is limited so places must be booked via Eknight@leicesterymca.co.uk or 0116 2046224.
Started in January 2010, the remodelling programme has created vibrant, modern accommodation clusters for 49 young people, with a mix of one-bed studio flats, four-bed and six-bed clusters, all with en-suite facilities. Young people, aged 16 - 25, will progress through a pathway which will cater for different levels of support needs, give them an exciting place to call home and something to aspire to.
"This investment has enabled us to create supported housing for the future, getting rid of the out-dated bed-sits and replacing them with high quality facilities for young people at risk of homelessness. Our service also provides young people with the skills and support they need to move on from us to independent living." Paul Brown, Chief Executive of Leicester YMCA
The project was funded by the Department for Children, Schools & Families and the Homes and Communities Agency.
Leicester YMCA has just been awarded £1 million lottery money to develop services for young care leavers and offenders within the same building. The Y-PoD project will provide access to housing, health services, education, training and employment opportunities through a single gateway, delivered in partnership with Leicester City Council, Connexions Leicestershire and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust.
