1,000 mile cycle for youth opportunities

Friday, 25th July, 2008
Neil Griffiths will be raising money for Leicester YMCA when he cycles 1,000 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats this August. Neil, The Chair of trustees of Leicester YMCA, aims to raise £10,000 to provide a permanent fund to enable disadvantaged local young people to have the opportunity for life-changing experiences. To do this he will be cycling the distance over 15 days, at an average of 64 miles per day.

In preparation Neil has spent the last few months cycling the roads of Leicestershire, totalling more than 2500 miles so far. 45 year-old Neil said, "This is an entirely different prospect to the two London Marathons I have run. This is the equivalent of a marathon every day for two weeks!"

Neil hopes to establish a permanent youth opportunity fund of at least £10,000, which will help young people gain skills and self-esteem. The aim of the fund is to help to enable young people, who Leicester YMCA works with, to gain some of the experiences denied to them as a result of their circumstances. This could be as simple as a pair of shoes to attend an interview or a trip to an arts or sports event; to something more developmental like a volunteering trip overseas.

Land's End to Manchester ...... so far!
Update 19th August
Neil set out from Land's End last Wednesday and by Tuesday 19th August he had arrived in Manchester - half way through his 1,000 miles. Neil has experienced some changeable weather, broken panniers and big hills but he is living up to his challenge - now he's off to the Highlands.

Challenge Completed!
Update 29th August
Neil arrived at John O'Groats on Wednesday, 27th August having cycled 1,030 miles taking him a total of 95 hours over 15 days!
